Urgent Action Needed For AMA Vote on Assisted SuicideNovember 7, 2018 9:32 pm
Communication sent to all Florida Guilds of the Catholic Medical Association
This is another urgent message to encourage you to take action prior to the November 12, 2018 vote by the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association on the revised report of the Council on Ethical and Judicial Affairs (CEJA) which reaffirmsAMA Code of Medical Ethics provisions in opposition to physician-assisted suicide and euthanasia. The report was revised after the House of Delegates referred it back to CEJA at its June meeting. It is imperative that the House of Delegates accept this report which will resolve the issue for many years to comeIf you are a member of the AMA, please comment at the Online Forum on the AMA website to express your support of the CEJA report.
- If you do not already have an AMA online account, you must first register with the AMA by opening a free registration account. You can do that here:
- Once you have signed in, you may put your testimony into the Online Forum. Please do not use religious arguments in your comments. This testimony is carefully reviewed and compiled by AMA staff and has equal weight to onsite live testimony. There are only 12-15 comments to date, whereas there were 80 prior to the June House of Delegates meeting.
- If you are not a member of the AMA, we urge you to join so that you can enter comments at the Online Forum and participate in this critical vote. At this point in the calendar year, physicians may join the AMA for half price dues. If you call the membership telephone number (800-262-3211), the AMA will let you pay next year’s full dues and get this year included at no charge, a two-for-one deal which would be beneficial for those who want to be active in the AMA next year as well.
- If you are or are not a member of the AMA, please contact House of Delegate members in your state and ask them to attend and vote in favor of the CEJA report (list of delegates attached). You can also contact your specialty members and urge support for the CEJA report.
I cannot stress enough how detrimental it would be to efforts to fight the legalization of assisted suicide if the AMA abandons its opposition position – please do whatever you can do to assist. Thank you.
